A Grenada woman arrested in late November for allegedly transporting 103 pounds of marijuana through Madison died in the Madison County Detention Center over the weekend.

Lanekia Michelle Brown was found unresponsive in a cell. An autopsy has been ordered and the case is currently under investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

The autopsy is expected to be completed later this week.

Sheriff Randy Tucker declined to comment, saying it was MBI’s investigation at this time.

MBI spokesman Capt. Johnny Poulos said Wednesday there were no updates in the case.

“It is an ongoing investigation,” he said. “There’s no additional information available.”

Brown’s mother, Margaret Johnson, told WJTV that her daughter was three to four weeks pregnant.

Brown was arrested with a Texas man, Marcus Anthony Redrick, on Nov. 26 by a drug interdiction unit on I-55 after a traffic stop was initiated for careless driving.

The Madison Police Department said the officer noticed an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and brought in a K-9 unit, which later discovered the large cache of drugs.

Following the arrest, MBI and the Grenada Police Department executed a search warrant at Brown’s house in Grenada and discovered an additional two pounds of marijuana, along with packaging materials and scales.

Both were being held without bond.
