Madison County is applying for a piece of an overall $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help fund the adult drug court.

Madison County Judge Staci O’Neal, who was appointed a special circuit judge by Judge Steve Ratcliff, approached the board of supervisors last week for permission to apply for the funding.

O’Neal said the grant would be awarded in $400,000 increments and go towards treatment and existing adult drug courts.

She said there were “no matching fund requirements,” and if approved “it is just free money as they say.”

District 3 Supervisor Gerald Steen asked Board Attorney Katie Bryant Snell to work with O’Neal on the grant application.

Supervisors then unanimously approved O’Neal moving forward with the application.
