A Madison man and his father were sentenced to federal prison this week for their role in an odometer rollback scheme that lasted upwards of four years.

Zachary Longgrear, 29, of Madison and his father Mark Longgrear, 54, of Jackson were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves for conspiring to reset and alter hundreds of vehicles’ odometers. In addition, the pair was convicted of giving false statements and securities fraud.

Zachary was sentenced to 28 months in prison and his father was sentenced to 57 months in prison. They are also ordered to pay $1.5 million in restitution.

According to U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst, the scheme lasted from February 2014 to at least February 2018 and involved their business Southern Auto Buyers LLC.

In addition to altering the odometers, the Longgrears “forged and fraudulently created paperwork to secure new titles showing false lower mileage on these vehicles, and then sold the vehicles directly to individuals and automobile dealerships at much higher prices,” Hurst’s office stated in a release.

Over 200 vehicles with altered odometers were involved, with some sold to dealerships in Mississippi.
