MADISON — Five people were arrested here following a crime spree last Friday that involved a host of offenses from auto theft to armed carjacking.

Police initially responded shortly after 7 a.m. on Dec. 21 to a report of a stolen 2017 Honda Accord at 125 Stonegate Dr.

“The husband had walked outside to start the vehicle in the early morning hours and after approximately 10 minutes, the husband returned to the driveway to find his vehicle missing,” Madison Police stated in a release.

During the course of the investigation, officers were able to identify a white Dodge Challenger, later determined to have been stolen hours earlier in the city of Byram, used in the crime.

Fast forward to 9:24 p.m. the following night and Madison Police responded to 489 North Old Canton Road after a report of an armed carjacking.

“The victims reported that their 2018 black Honda CRV was stolen at gunpoint by two black males,” Madison Police stated. “The vehicle was last seen westbound on Hoy Road. A short time later, the stolen vehicle was spotted by a patrol officer on Hoy Road approaching the Old Canton Road area.”

At that point, police say a pursuit ensured throughout the city onto Highway 463, later ending near the entrance to Ingleside subdivision after the stolen vehicle struck a tree. From there the occupant, 24-year-old Satchel Jamal Tolbert of Canton, ran into a wooded area.

Police say Tolbert was apprehended quickly and they recovered a .22 caliber handgun. He was charged with armed carjacking, auto burglary, felon in possession of a firearm, felony fleeing and auto theft.

“Officers and deputies of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department remained in the area and a short time later, a vehicle involved in the armed carjacking returned to the area in an attempt to locate Tolbert,” police stated. “Officers began pursuing the vehicle on Reunion Parkway and it was noted that the vehicle contained several occupants believed to be armed based on prior information obtained by investigators. During the pursuit, officers observed the driver with a handgun as the vehicle approached the intersection of Reunion Parkway and Bozeman Road. The fleeing vehicle nearly struck two patrol cars at the intersection; therefore the decision was made to disable the fleeing vehicle by deflating the rear tires as the vehicle fled south on Bozeman Road approaching a populated area of the City of Madison.”

After the vehicle left the road, officers were able to successfully arrest the four occupants without further incident.

Terrance Paige, 24, of Utica was charged with armed carjacking, auto burglary, felon in possession of a firearm, auto theft, and possession of methamphetamine.

Dyhka Lakayla Cooper, 20, of Utica was charged with accessory after the fact of armed carjacking.

Michael James Gibson, 18, of Jackson, was charged with armed carjacking, auto burglary, felon in possession of a firearm, and auto theft.

Cornelius Carter, 20, was charged with armed carjacking, auto burglary, felon in possession of a firearm, felony fleeing, auto theft, and possession of cocaine.

A total of three handguns, cocaine and methamphetamine were recovered from the vehicle along with items linked to an unreported auto burglary in Madison. The firearm possessed by the driver was reported stolen from the City of Byram in the month of November. Investigators were also able to determine that the occupants were responsible for the auto theft reported one day earlier in Stonegate.
