While last week's voter turnout in Madison County was higher than the 2012 Presidential primary, officials were shocked at how light it actually was.

Total turnout in the county was 18,166 - 22.26 percent - of the eligible 81,609 voters. Of that, there were less than 15,000 votes in the Republican Primary.

Madison County GOP Chair John Taylor said following the election they anticipated at least 20,000 voters, but were hoping for the 26,000 that turned out during the presidential election.

He said for the runoff they will plan for only 7,000 voters, but hope to see more than that.

Madison County Circuit Clerk Lee Westbrook said she was shocked from the lower turnout but expected that after seeing only 300 absentee ballots.
In 2013, there were over 4,000 absentee ballots. In 2012, there were over 3,000.

Of the 42 precincts in Madison County, many hovered around the 30 percent turnout mark, with several having over 30 percent participation and less than 10 percent participation.

The highest turnout percent came from the Lake Caroline Clubhouse Precinct, with over 40 percent of its 1,937 registered voters casting a ballot. The lowest turnout came from the Tougaloo precinct, with just 1.39 percent of the 1,079 voters casting a ballot. There were zero votes in the Republican Primary and only 15 in the Democratic Primary.

There were more votes in the U.S. Senate race between incumbent Thad Cochran and challenger Chris McDaniel.

Cochran finished with 61.25 percent of the votes (9,371) to McDaniel's 38.05 percent (5,821).

Cochran won 28 of the county's 42 precincts. McDaniel won 12, including some with just one or two votes cast. There were two precincts that had zero Republican votes recorded.

The special election for Madison County Chancery Clerk also garnered a lot of attention.

Ronny Lott and David Overby are in a June 24 run-off for the seat. Lott finished first with 5,842 votes but failed to capture 50 percent, plus one vote. Overby trailed by less than 600 votes with 5,260. Another opponent, Irby Ford, finished in third place with 3,535 votes.

Lott won 18 of the precincts, mainly his base in Madison. Overby won 11 precincts, mainly his base in Ridgeland.

Ford won 10 of the more rural precincts. Lott and Ford split one precinct with 15 votes apiece and there were two with no Republican votes.
