JACKSON-New Stage Theatre opens its 49th season with the regional premiere of "Mrs. Mannerly," an irreverent, yet poignant comedy inspired by the hilarious memories of a childhood etiquette class, by Jeffrey Hatcher. Starring New Stage favorites Shirley Simpson and Ray McFarland, this witty comedy of manners shows the difference between how we present ourselves and who we really are. Mrs. Mannerly will run September 9-21.

It is 1967... the Summer of Love. But for five children on the second floor of the YMCA in Steubenville, Ohio it is the Summer of Etiquette as taught by formidable Helen Anderson Kirk, better known as "Mrs. Mannerly." Ten-year-old Jeffrey is not good at anything but being polite. Obsessed with good manners, he is determined to be the first student ever to achieve a perfect score on the challenging final exam. Mrs. Mannerly has never had a student in her 36 years of etiquette classes achieve that feat. Jeffrey faces off with his classmates (all played by one actor) as he maneuvers his way toward the top to try to take the grand prize!

"The play is great fun with two terrific actors who are just going to have a great time on stage. I'm just along for the ride," said returning director and New Stage veteran John Maxwell. "If you like your humor with a little dash of mystery (and who doesn't) you're going to love Mrs. Mannerly."

New Stage Artistic Director Francine Thomas Reynolds added, "Mrs. Mannerly is a witty "comedy of manners" that's actually set in a manners class. With John Maxwell at the helm as the play's director and the talents of Ray McFarland and Shirley Simpson on stage, the play becomes much more and transforms into a poignant story of friendship between two mismatched, three-dimensional characters. I am thrilled we have the talent of these three theatre veterans involved in Mrs. Mannerly. It is the perfect way to open New Stage Theatre's 49th Season."

The role of Mrs. Mannerly will be played by Shirley Simpson (Miramar Beach, FL) and the role of Jeffrey will be played by Ray McFarland (Jackson). Simpson and McFarland appear through the courtesy of Actors' Equity Association.

An Actor Chat is immediately following the performances on Wednesdays, September 10 and 17.
